In a striking case that underscores vulnerabilities in U.S. systems, Lina Maria Orovio-Hernandez, a 59-year-old Colombian national residing illegally in Boston, has been indicted for multiple federal offenses.

Over two decades, she allegedly lived under a stolen identity, unlawfully obtained over $400,000 in government benefits, and voted in the 2024 presidential election.

A Two-Decade Deception

According to federal prosecutors, Orovio-Hernandez assumed a stolen identity more than 20 years ago.

Using this false identity, she acquired nine state IDs, including a Massachusetts Real ID, and applied for a U.S. passport by falsely claiming birth in Puerto Rico.

Illicit Gains at Taxpayer Expense

Between 2005 and January 2025, Orovio-Hernandez allegedly received:

  • $259,589 in Section 8 rental assistance
  • $101,257 in Social Security disability benefits
  • $43,348 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits

These funds, intended to support eligible U.S. citizens in need, were fraudulently obtained through her assumed identity.

Unlawful Participation in Federal Elections

In January 2023, Orovio-Hernandez registered to vote under a stolen identity.

She subsequently cast a ballot in the November 2024 presidential election. Surveillance footage captured her wearing an “I Voted” sticker at a bank on Election Day.

Legal Repercussions

Orovio-Hernandez faces multiple charges, including:

  • False representation of a Social Security number
  • Making a false statement in a U.S. passport application
  • Aggravated identity theft
  • Receiving stolen government money or property
  • Fraudulent voter registration
  • Fraudulent voting

If convicted, she could face significant prison time and substantial fines.

Broader Implications and Similar Cases

This case is not isolated. In Ohio, reports emerged of individuals allegedly stealing over $150,000 in SNAP benefits. Additionally, in North Carolina, 19 foreign nationals were charged with illegally voting in the 2016 federal elections.

These instances highlight the need for robust verification systems to protect the integrity of government programs and elections.

Calls for Reform

The exploitation of federal benefits and electoral systems by individuals unlawfully residing in the U.S. raises concerns about systemic vulnerabilities. Ensuring that government assistance reaches its intended recipients and that electoral processes remain secure is paramount.

As the legal proceedings against Orovio-Hernandez unfold, this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding public resources and the democratic process.
